There's nothing to me worse than acid reflux. It sneaks up on you and makes you feel as if you're heart is coming up out of your esophagus. It's annoying too and antacids don't always work. Acid reflux is one of those misnomers. The name implies that you have too much acid when in reality what causes acid reflux is having too little. Too little acid means that inside your stomach the food you've eaten is slowly fermenting which emits a large amount of gas and pushes both the food and remaining acid up toward your espophagus. Therefore while antacids might help in the short term (by taking care of the remaining acid), it's like putting a band-aid on a large wound. Moreover, long term use of products like that can lead to health problems such as ulcers and poor nutrient absorption.
It's not a pretty picture.
So how do we combat that? Lemons! Lemons actually contain malic acid that help calm the stomach and restore Ph balance, correcting the ratio of stomach acid.
The best way I've found is to take one whole lemon and cut it in half. Squeeze one half of the lemon's juice into a cup, then place the other one at the bottom of the cup to sit. Pour in hot water and add a teaspoon of honey or whatever sweetener you'd like to make sure it's not too sour. Drink and wait about five minutes. You will find that it works quickly, faster than any antacid I've ever taken.
Lemons are also a good source of Vitamin C and potassium. The worlds wonder fruit!
